The Technology Behind jDent
Why it feels fast, explained for dentists, not developers.
You should not have to understand software architecture to run a dental clinic. But if you are trusting a system with every patient record and every rupee you bill, it is fair to ask what it is built on and why that matters. This page answers that in plain terms.
Quick answer
jDent is cloud-based dental clinic management software for Pakistan, used in a web browser at app.jdentclinic.com with nothing installed on clinic computers. The interface is a React single-page application, the backend is a NestJS API, data is held in an SQL database with Redis caching, and the platform runs on dedicated VPS infrastructure. The Android and iOS apps use the same API as the browser, so there is one source of truth. Pricing is in Pakistani Rupees from PKR 2,000 per month and the first month is free.
The Real Difference Is Architecture, Not Age
The biggest gap between older clinic systems and modern ones is not which programming language was used. It is where the software lives.
| In practice | Software installed on a clinic PC | Modern cloud software (jDent) |
|---|---|---|
| Where your data lives | On that one computer | On the server |
| If that computer dies or is stolen | Records can be lost | Records are unaffected |
| Backups | Someone has to remember | Nothing for you to back up |
| Working from a second machine | Reinstall and copy data | Just log in |
| Using it on a tablet at the chairside | Usually not possible | Same system, any device |
| Running two branches | Two separate copies, separate records | One account, staff per branch |
| Getting an update | Manual install per machine | Already there when you log in |
| New computer at reception | Setup project | Open the browser and log in |
Note: plenty of excellent software is written in older languages. The problems above come from the installed-on-one-machine model, not from any particular language.
What jDent Is Actually Built With
Five choices, and what each one changes for your clinic day.
React interface
What it is: a single-page application, so the browser does not reload the whole page every time you click.
What you feel: moving from a patient, to their dental chart, to their invoice is immediate. Forms open in place instead of navigating you away and losing your position.
NestJS API backend
What it is: a structured API layer that every client talks to.
What you feel: the website and the mobile apps read and write the same data. A payment taken at reception is on the dentist phone instantly, with no sync step and no version arguments.
Redis caching
What it is: frequently requested data held in memory instead of being rebuilt on every request.
What you feel: your patient list, today schedule and dashboard stay quick even as the clinic grows into thousands of records.
SQL database
What it is: structured, relational storage rather than loose files or spreadsheets.
What you feel: real reporting. Because every invoice line knows its procedure, doctor, lab cost and payment, the system can work out revenue share and outstanding balances reliably.
Dedicated VPS hosting
What it is: your own server resources rather than crowded shared hosting.
What you feel: speed that does not depend on whoever else is on the same box, and headroom during your busiest clinic hours.
Responsive by design
What it is: one interface that reflows for small screens instead of a cut-down mobile version.
What you feel: lists become cards on a tablet, and the scheduler, forms and printing all work at the chairside.
What This Adds Up To
Architecture is only worth discussing because of what it removes from your day.
- Nothing to install. New computer at reception? Open the browser and log in.
- Nothing to back up. Your records are not sitting on a machine that can be stolen or fail.
- Most clinics are live in about an hour. There is no migration project blocking you.
- Updates arrive on their own. No version numbers, no per-machine installs.
- One system across branches. Staff assigned per branch, reporting across the group.
jDent runs in the browser, with nothing installed on the clinic computer.
Your Data, Stated Plainly
We would rather describe exactly what is in place than make claims we cannot evidence.
Clinic isolation
Every clinic account is separated from every other clinic on the platform.
Individual logins
Each staff member has their own account. Passwords are encrypted, never stored as plain text.
You control access
Roles set view, create, edit and delete separately per module, so a receptionist can book appointments without seeing revenue.
Data on the server, not the desk
A stolen laptop or a failed hard disk at the clinic does not take your patient records with it.
What we do not claim: jDent is not HIPAA, GDPR or ISO certified. Those are formal audits, and we will not imply we hold certifications we have not completed. jDent also requires an internet connection, so there is no offline mode.
